“My wife and I have been going to [the] 9Healthfair for many years in several different towns in Colorado, so it plays a big part in our lives. In April of 2003, we went again to have our annual blood screening but this time mine came back a little different. My PSA number came in a little high with a suggestion to make an appointment with my doctor. With further evaluation I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. I had no previous symptoms. I was given several options but at my age of 51, surgery was the best for me. As you can see 9Healthfair saved my life. My family and I are so grateful for the services available to all of our communities. 9Health Fair is great and I am looking forward to many more 9fairs.”

As a native to Colorado, Esther served as site coordinator for the Department of Human Services Food Stamp Office 9Health Fair for three years. During those three years, she also participated in the 9Health Fair screenings and learned she had high cholesterol and high triglycerides. Since then, she has worked with her primary care provider to manage these concerns.
Esther now sits on the 9Health Fair Community Involvement Committee (CIC). Esther says her favorite thing about 9Health Fair is that it is for everybody, whether you have insurance or not.

IN THE CLASSROOM Background
The concept of a student-staffed health fair was the original idea of the National Health Screening Council of Volunteer Organizations. The program was first introduced to Colorado students as 9Give 'Em Health in 1982. At that time, it was a pilot program limited to Denver and Jefferson County schools. Due to overwhelming success, it has grown statewide and is now known as 9Health Fair In The Classroom. Fairs are held throughout the school year in elementary, middle, and high schools across Colorado. This program is administered through the 9Health Fair office in Denver.
GOALS
The goals of 9Health Fair In the Classroom are as follows:
- Provide an opportunity for the student coordinators to become leaders in their communities.
- Encourage students to assume responsibility for their own health and to set attainable health goals.
- Raise awareness and help students understand how healthy choices can affect their overall health and safety.
- Offer screenings and interactive displays & activities that provide educational, hands-on experiences.
- Answer health questions and refer students to additional medical attention as needed.
