#BusyBeingHealthy with Aaron Matas

We’ve featured a variety of on-air talent from 9News, such as Morning Anchor Corey Rose and Meteorologist Belen DeLeon as they’ve shared their strategies for staying #BusyBeingHealthy. This week, we caught up with 9News Sports Reporter Aaron Matas.

9Health Fair: You always participate in our health fairs. Why is the important for you and how do you use your results?

Aaron: It’s important because it’s a pretty extensive snap shot of my health, and I take that seriously. I have seen swings in my cholesterol that I believe correlate with my diet and workout plan around the time of the fair. What a great thing for someone to see. It’s been a great lesson for me on just how important it is to eat right and stay active.

9Health Fair: Covering sports, you probably work a lot of weekends and maybe even some late, late nights. Does this affect your sleep at all? If so, how and how do you work around it? Especially given that you have two little ones at home that probably wake up early.

Aaron: It is a bit of an odd schedule, but I do my very best to maintain somewhat of a normal sleep schedule. There are some nights that turn in to very late ones and there’s nothing you can do about that. However, my wife is great about letting me catch up a little bit on sleep in the mornings before my daughters come and jump on me. I personally know I do best with a minimum of 7 hours of sleep and try to shoot for that.

9Health Fair: How do you manage your meals during the work day? It must be hard when you’re at a sporting event and the majority of food options are things like nachos and pretzels with cheese.

Aaron: Ugh. This part is hard. If you’re on the road or at a game the healthy options are limited. Many people I work with joke about the 15 pounds everyone puts on during the Broncos season. I do try very hard to bring my food from home. That’s not only good for health reasons but also for my wallet. I also find that if you do this regularly then going out for lunch/dinner with co-workers feels a lot more rewarding.

9Health Fair: Besides going to the gym, what are your favorite ways to fit in more exercise (walk the dog, go for hikes, etc.)?

Aaron: We have a 1-year-old Lab/Shepherd mix that needs to get out. So she helps to keep me honest. I like to both walk and run with her and am slowly bringing her along to hopefully run a half marathon with me next summer. I also enjoy swimming, biking, and hiking as well.
