Reducing the spread of respiratory illnesses, like the flu, is more important than ever this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. And, the time to get your flu shot is now.
9Health and Safeway/Albertsons will again be providing free flu shots or flu shot vouchers at 9Health Fairs this fall. You must make an appointment to attend. Click or tap here to find a 9Health Fair location near you.
We talked with several experts on Facebook Live about this year’s upcoming flu season including Dr. Emily Cheshire – a nurse practitioner and professor from the University of Colorado College of Nursing, Pharmacist Nikki Price from Safeway/Albertsons, and 9Health Expert Dr. Payal Kohli.
Dr. Kohli shared three good reasons to get the flu vaccine. She called it her “three S approach”.
Selfish – Simply put, YOU do not want to get the flu, especially this year. Anyone with the flu will be assumed to have COVID-19. Also, you don’t want the possibility of getting two infections at the same time such as the seasonal flu and COVID-19.
Selfless – Getting the flu vaccine protects others in your community. We also need to keep from overwhelming the healthcare system this fall and winter during the COVID-19 pandemic and getting vaccinated helps those efforts.
Science – Vaccines in general work to not just fight off the virus that you’re vaccinating against but also rev up the immune system which can help your body’s response to other viruses as well.
All experts agree that during this time of COVID-19, in addition to the flu vaccine, masks, and social distancing will also help keep us healthy.
