Maybe Getting a Flu Shot isn’t about You

Who’s Most at Risk for Flu?This might sound harsh, but maybe it’s time we go there. Not everything is about you, and the flu shot is the perfect example.

Who You Affect When You Don’t Get a Flu Shot

So, you never get sick you say. Maybe, but what if this one time you’re wrong?

The flu shot never works. They never get the right strain. Maybe, but again, what if this time you’re wrong?

You get the flu, but it’s not so bad for you. In about a week you’re back to normal. Great for you, but not for all the people you infected in the 24-hour period before you realized you had the flu. “Adults are contagious 1-2 days before getting symptoms and up to 7 days after becoming ill,” cites Medical News Today.

Staying home once you realize you’re sick isn’t enough. You must vaccinate yourself to protect others for the period before you show symptoms.

Already, the first child death by flu has been reported for the season. The child had not been vaccinated. The CDC recommends getting your flu shot by the end of October or “before flu begins spreading in your community.”

It may never occur to you, but when you do show up to work sick you are putting your coworkers at risk. This is unfair to them, not just for their own sake, but you don’t know who they will then encounter. Maybe they have an elderly parent they live with or an infant at home. Maybe they have serious health issues you’re not aware of that could put their lives at risk. It’s just not worth it.

Who’s Most at Risk for Flu?

According to the Mayo Clinic, these are some of the groups who are most at risk for flu complications:

  • Children under the age 5, especially under the age of 2
  • 65+
  • Pregnant women
  • Residents of nursing homes or other long-term care facilities

We encourage you to take just a few minutes to think about the people you work with and your friends and family. Do any of them fit the above descriptions? If so, we hope you’ll get the flu shot so that during the 24-48 hours before you realize you have the flu, you don’t infect them.
