Sometimes making simple changes in lifestyle can lead to improved health and wellbeing. Mindfulness is one practice that can be useful for those suffering from anxiety, depression, and daily stress. Mindfulness is an awareness of the present moment and thinking about the present moment with an attitude of openness and acceptance.
During the month of May, we did a special series for Mental Health Awareness Month. In the fourth episode, we talked about mindfulness with licensed counselor, Christopher Maier, “Mindfulness is paying attention in a certain way – in the moment, on purpose, non-judgmentally.”
He says the attitude you approach mindfulness with is the most important component, “The attitude I think is more important than the action. The attitude is I’m going to pay attention whether I like it or not. The attitude is approaching your life with description rather than evaluation.”
Maier has his own practice, Whole Story, where in addition to mindfulness, he explains that he also does life coaching, psychotherapy, and spiritual unfoldment. Maier is also a volunteer for Spark the Change Colorado and their pro bono mental health program, “I’m in private practice and I donate one hour of my week to see someone without any charge. It brings in a diversity of people who otherwise couldn’t afford to see a therapist. It’s very fulfilling and I encourage any other licensed therapists out there to consider if you can give one hour of your week.”
Maier shared a lot about mindfulness and mental health with us on Facebook Live, you can learn more by watching the video in this post. You can also see all of the episodes of our special Mental Health Education series by clicking here.
